The Monarch Butterfly Fund (MBF) is working toward conserving monarch overwintering habitat in Mexico through its sustainable development projects, supporting the livelihood of local residents by encouraging other means of income than that from logging or timber-related sources.
It encourages artisan- and tourism-related income streams, by funding the work of partner organization Alternare. It holds dozens of workshops each year to teach local people capacity-building skills, such as producing “organic fertilizer, organic vegetables, forest and fruit trees and adobe” (MBF 2014). MBF and other organizations have supported work to build latrines, cisterns and stoves, as well as teach about “solid waste management, sustainable agriculture, water and soil conservation and participatory community diagnostics, evaluation and planning” (MBF 2014).
