The People for Pollinators project asks places with public spaces in the community surrounding Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge to plant pollinator gardens, ranging from schools to businesses. The project provides educational materials, site planning help, maintenance expertise, and seeds or plants, all at no cost to the participant.

Project participants are asked to contribute volunteers, ongoing maintenance, and space for the garden. This locally based project provides an excellent example of how National Wildlife Refuges, native plant nurseries, local NGOs or other entities could implement pollinator habitat at a community-scale (Bures 2016).
