The Maryland Natural Heritage Program is creating “monarch and pollinator habitat on Maryland state lands—parks, wildlife management areas, natural resource management areas and forests” (Gibbs 2016). All state lands within the mountain and coastal monarch migratory flyway were visited and evaluated for their potential to enhance and create pollinator and monarch habitat.
Over 50 sites were designated as having high potential for habitat creation, and in 2016, eight of the most promising sites on state land were selected for habitat creation. Staff and volunteers were involved in collecting wild seeds for the desired milkweed species and fall nectar species local to Maryland.
