With the launch of the biological monitoring program at protected natural areas, the implementation of the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (Programa de Conservación para el Desarrollo Sostenible—Procodes) and the application of the national standardized monitoring protocol, monarch butterfly monitoring has been energetically carried out in the northern regional of the Sierra Madre Oriental.
Among the results obtained in the 2013-2016 period, monarch passage and stopover sites have been identified during their autumn migration, in addition to reproduction sites during the spring migration, within and without the protected natural area. In addition to promoting habitat protection and restoration, the monarch butterfly monitoring program at Cumbres de Monterrey National Park includes environmental education activities at schools and communities in the region—in particular, the Monterrey metropolitan area—to foster citizen awareness with respect to the species’ migratory phenomenon. The project has promoted capacity building among community watch brigades, for which the monarch butterfly is a priority.
